Peter Habeler is an Austrian mountaineer, a legend in the climbing world and beyond. Now in his late 70's, he last climbed the North Face of the Eiger at the age of 74, with David Lama.
It was always Peter's dream to become an extreme alpinist, he was determined to make his hobby his profession. He became a certified ski instructor at age 21 and mountain guide and was the first European to climb the 'Big Walls' in Yosemite, including establishing a record for the fastest ascent the Southwest Wall of El Capitan. In 1969 he started climbing with Reinhold Messner, making fast ascents of major routes in the Alps and overseas. Their ascent of Gasherbrum 1 in 1975, was made in 3 days and was widely seen as ushering in a new era of alpine-style ascents in contrast to big-team siege tactics.
Habeler and Messner were an inseparable duo, climbing many 8000m peaks without supplemental oxygen, including Cho Oyu, Nanga Parbat, Kanchenjunga, Hidden Peak and Everest, on 8 May 1978, an achievement that had been previously thought impossible.
Peter founded the Peter Habeler Ski and Mountaineering School in his hometown of Mayrhofen, Austria. In 1999 he was granted the title 'Professor' by the Austrian Government.
