Bristol Opera present La Belle Helene

Thursday 11 April–Saturday 13 April, 7.30pm

A mash-up of Ancient Greek meets 1930's Chic

Bristol Opera brings you a very famous Greek myth – but as you won't have seen it before! If you hear the words "Trojan War", you may well think of the Greeks exacting a terrible revenge for the abduction of their beautiful Queen Helen by the arrogant Trojan Prince Paris. But what if the official version of events had falsified the facts? What if Helen wasn't an unwilling victim? What if the Greeks were only too keen to encourage her to be unfaithful to her ineffectual husband?

Offenbach's version of the story turns it into a wicked romp, a typical French bedroom farce with Helen and Paris weaving their not so innocent way through a maze of corrupt priests, idiotic kings and debauched party animals – all to the most vivacious and ravishing tunes which took Paris by storm in 1864 and is storming Bristol now in a production which throws historical accuracy out of the window and is determined to have as much fun as possible!
